Elephant Care has initiated an insurance coverage scheme for mahouts. EC has an ambitions plan to provide free life insurance cover upto Rs 1.0 lakh for the mahouts. This offer is being extended to those mahouts who hold exemplary love for their elephants in their care. The EC mahout scheme is designed to insure mahouts, specifically because they are the closest to the elephants and the most prone to temper trantrums of the huge being. Mahouts, we know, are by far the most uncared for, sometimes untrained and often temporary recruits in the elephant management circuit. The programme aims at helping the mahouts discover the immense responsibility vested on their shoulders. Mahouts who understand their responsibilities and resolve to love and care for the anmal in their care will be sponsored for the life long coverage. A medical check-up has also been palnned for the mahouts. EC was inspired to open an exclusive scheme for mahouts for two reasons: Primarily they are the most ignored group when it comes to the elephant world and secondly because the eligibility criteria could also serve as a check on ill-treatment meted out to scores of elephants. Selection of mahouts for this special scheme will be carried out by a panel of experts in the field. |

| ID cards for elephants in Kerala | |
Elephants in Kerala went hi-tech with the implantation of exclusive 10-digit microchip ID cards in their bodies which would be helpful in research. Around 100 tuskers have been implanted with microchips in Kerala and same will be followed at various camps organised in different parts of the State. The programme is being implemented to ensure proper upkeep of the jumbos by their owners and mahouts.According to Dr. E K Eshwaran, Chief Veterinary Surgeon, Kerala Forest Department, this is something like a registered number of a vehicle which can never be changed. Like a vehicle is registered and issued certificate, same is done on elephants by giving it a 10 digit code number which cannot be changed. At the same time we are also maintaining a record of its habits, nature and character after inquiring from their owners, mahouts and NGOs which will help us in future to gather more information on elephants in Kerala, said Dr. E K Eshwaran, Chief Veterinarian, Kerala Forest Department. |
